HISTORY OF THE MARSH BUTCHERS

AS SUGGESTED BY SPUD WORKING LINE, HERE IS A NOT TOO POPULAR BUT A DEADLY BREED OF GAMEFOWL ORIGINATED IN THE 1800S.
DURING THOSE TIMES, WHAT WERE BEING FOUGHT AT THE PITS WERE WHITEHACKLE FOWL, BROWN REDS RED QUILLS AND ROUNDHEADS FROM THE OLD COUNTRY, ENGLAND

THE ORIGINATOR CROSSED A WHITEHACKLE FOWL TO SPANISH SPEEDERS AND CAME OUT WITH A FASTER VERSION OF THE WHITEHACKLE FOWLS..
THIS FAMILY OF GAMEFOWL LOVERS DEVELOPED A FAST  BREAKING RED GAMEFOWL THAT UP TO THIS DATE IS A VERY IMPORTANT BREED, THAT WHEN BLENDED INTO THE NEW MODELS OF GAMEFOWL, WOULD IMPROVE THE WINNING PERCENTGES OF THE CROSS!!

THESE BUTCHERS ARE QUITE UNPOPULAR THESE DAYS BECAUSE OF ;
1) THEIR LOW STATION,; ALTHOUGH THEIR LONG THIGHS AND SHORT SHANKS  MAKE THEM DEADLY AT THE DRAW;
2)DEEP KEELED, ALMOST SLAB SIDED;TO THOSE WHO ARE FAMILIAR WITH THEM, GIVES THAT EXTRA KICK THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WIN AND A LOSE IN THE BOARD!!!
3)PERHAPS WE CAN SAY THAT THIS IS THE HISTORY OF THE MARSH FAMILY, THE ORIGINATORS OF THIS FAST AND FURIOUS GAMEFOWL!!

HERE GOES----

BUTCHER

Peter Marsh (1800's) - The first gamefowl breeder/cockfighter in the family. He bred and fought Whitehackles, Smokeballs, and Roundheads. He took part in small money mains and local tournaments. He became associated with George Green who was to become the father-in-law of Peter's son Phil.

Phil Marsh (1869-1945) - Phil was probably the best known of the Marsh family as he became nationally known through his efforts in breeding and fighting gamefowl. It was Phil who made the Speeder bloodline and along with his son Bill created the Butcher fowl. He operated a meat market in Fort Plain,N.Y., and the Butchers were named after his profession. Phil was considered to be a better breeder than conditioner and his son Bill was just the opposite. He prided himself on excellent physical condition and at the age of 70 could still kick higher than his head. Phil was an avid coon and fox hunter with the hounds and took pride in his hound breeding also. He passed away after sustaining injuries brought on after being kicked in the kidney by a cow in his slaughterhouse.

Bill Marsh (1894-1977) - Son of Phil. Fed and conditioned his first main alone at the age of 13. Considered to be a better conditioner than breeder. When he and Phil fought at the Orlando Tournaments he went down to Florida one month ahead of the tournament with the fowl. He did most, if not all, of the conditioning from age 15 on. Bill fought cocks along the eastern United States from New York to Virginia. He worked most of his life as a cattle dealer and was a bootlegger during Prohibition. Like his father he was an avid bird, coon, and fox hunter as well as an avid carp fisherman. In the 1950's Bill would occasionally fight under the name "Goodman".

Alfred Marsh (1897-1971) - Alf was not as well known as his brother Bill. He basically dabbled in small mains and tournaments and took care of the fowl when Bill was unable to. Although he was not involved with the fowl to the extent that Bill was he was by no mean a pushover and won many mains on his own. Alf worked all his life in the family cattle business.

Phil Marsh II (1918-1995) - Son of Bill and named for his Grandfather. Serves as a Captain in the Military Police in WWII and served in North Africa and Europe. Participated in the Anzio campaign and the Battle of the Bulge. He also served as an aide to General Mark Clark while in Italy. He worked as a truck driver most of his life. After his retirement Phil was active in the sport fighting most of his fowl in New York and Pennsylvania.

Mark Marsh (1962-present) - Son of Phil II and employed in the law enforcement field for over 17 years. Learned from Bill and Phil and is fortunate to have access to many of their personal notes, breeding records as well as the family keep. Started caring for fowl at 4 years of age. Former amateur boxer and a well known softball player in central New York. Like his ancestors he is an avid hunter and carp fisherman and appreciates his heritage in the sport.[b]

BULIK IN THE PHILIPPINES

ASHLEY/ GENGEN/JON ARAYATA'S BULIKS

IT IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE, THAT THE FAMOUS ARAYATA CLAN OF CAVITE ACQUIRED THEIR BULIKS THRU FRIENDSHIP WITH THE LATE CONGRESSMAN LAGBAS.

WHERE DID CONGRESSMAN LAGBAS GET HIS BULIKS?

A DIRECTOR OF THE RGBA ONCE TOLD ME THAT THE BULIKS THAT CONGRESSMAN LAGBAS GAVE TO THE CAVITENOS CAME FROM HIM!

I SAW WITH MY OWN TWO EYES HOW MY FRIEND FROM MARIKINA AND ANTIPOO, WOULD BREED AT LEAST 200 BULIK COCKERELS PER SEASON FOR THE USE OF OUR

ACTIVE AND VERY COMPETITIVE CONGRESSMAN FROM THE NORTH! HE IS NO OTHER THAN OUR RGBA TREASURER AND [b]DIRECTOR PEPING CHAN.

I HAVE NOT ASKED HIM WHERE HE GOT HIS BULIKS. AS HE IS A VERY SECRETIVE,SOFT SPOKEN BUT METICULOUS BREEDER IN OUR AREA. ACCORDING TO HIM, HE

BREEDS HIS BULIKS TO THE SWEATERS! FIRST TIME I MET BREEDER/ BUSINESSMAN PEPING CHAN WAS IN 2007, WHEN WE FORMED THE RGBA. YEAR PREVIOUS TO THAT,

OR IN 2006, GENGEN ARAYATA WON 9 PERFECT FIGHTS TO WIN THE 2006 BAKBKAN CROWN WITH HIS BULIKS!!!

CAPTAIN DE SAGUN AND HIS BULIKS

WE CANNOT TALK ABOUT BULIKS WITHOUT MENTIONING THE NAME OF OUR LEGENDARY BREEDER, CAPTAIN DE SAGUN. A MEMBER OF RGBA BOYET CRUZ AND HIS PARTNER PRANCING GOT THEIR BULIK FROM CAPTAIN DE SAGUN, THE ENTRY MAYOR OSEO AS FOUGHT BY THE TRIUMVIRATE OF ALEX CALDERON/ MAYOR OSEO AND ANO OF TAYTAY SHOWED A BULIK OF PRANCING'S BREEDING, THE FIGHT AT ARANETA WHERE I SAW IT WIN WAS REALLY IMPRESSIVE. I LATER ACQUIRED THIS BULIK THAT WON UNSCATHED AGAINST A BREEDER OF TOP CALIBER STOCKS, THE STAG OF MR CARLOS TUMPALAN ( A GRAND FINALIST AT THE BAKBAKAN 2010 WITH 5.5 PTS AT THE SEMIS, WHO LATER GOT 3 DRAWS AND ANOTHER WIN AT THE FINALS )MADE A FATAL MISTAKE OF BEING DISTRACTED BY THE UMPIRE, AND WHOOSH, THE FIGHT WAS OVER IN THE FLASH OF AN EYE.

ANOTHER BREEDER WHO BREEDS THESE DOMS OR BULIK IS ATTORNEY REY DIRECTO, ANOTHER MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF RGBA. ATTY DIRECTO'S BULIKS GOT AN IMPRESSIVE RECORD OF 15 WINS AND 1 LOSS AT THE DERBIES. THEY DISPOSED OF THEIR ADVERSARIES IN GOOD FASHION. SOMEBODY OFFERED 50K FOR ONE OF THOSE BULIKS AND AN AMERICAN WAS SO MAKULIT TO GET HIS BULIK STAG THAT I WAS IMPRESSED BY ATTY DIRECTO'S HUMILITY AND PATIENCE!

JON ARAYATA, A BREEDER WHO BARELY STARTED BREEDING THIS PAST YEAR IS A LUCKY GUY. HIS RELATION TO COUSIN GENGEN AND OF COURSE UNCLE ASHLY ARAYATA GAVE HIM A BREAK. AS HE GOT THE BEST OF THE BULIKS OF THE CLAN! THIS KINSHIP PLUS HIS ASSOCIATION WITH RGBA DIRECTOR DENNIS DEL PILAR, A GUY WE CALL MR. DENNIS LACSON, DUE TO HIS VERY CLOSE FRIENDSHIP WITH JOEY LACSON OF BACOLOD, GAVE HIM THE MAGIC FORMULA OF BREEDING THE BULIKS WITH THE VAUNTED HIGH ACTION HATCHES OF JOEY LACSON/ MAMIE LACSON FAME. THEY WON HANDILY WITH 6 STRAIGHT WINS AT THE ELIMS/SEMIS AND GOT IN TROUBLE AS THE GREYS THAT THEY FOUGHT PERFORMED BELOW PAR. THIS ONLY GOES TO SHOW THAT THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO BREED ENOUGH BULIKS LAST YEAR. A NEWCOMER, EXPECT MORE FROM THESE GUYS AS THEY ARE SERIOUS BREEDERS AND DENNIS IS A GURU AT A VERY YOUNG AGE!!. BOTH ARE PROFESSIONALS AND KNOW WHAT THEY WANT AND HOW TO GET IT!

FINALLY ANOTHER TEAM AT RGBA WHO BREEDS AND FIGHTS A LOT OF BULIKS IS THE EDWIN AND ALVIN MONTON BROTHERS OF CAVITE. OF COURSE THEY GOT THEIR STOCKS DIRECT FROM THE MAN, GENGEN ARAYATA, THEY SCORED NINE WINS AT THE BKBAKAN 2009 DERBY AND HAVE AUTHENTIC BULIKS THAT THEY HAVE TESTED CROSSING WITH SEVERAL BLOODLINES. IT WAS MY TRIP TO THEIR FARM ASKING HOW TO BREED THE BULIK HENS THAT I GOT FROM SEVERAL BREEDERS IN OUR ASSOCIATION THAT BROUGHT ME TO THIS TOPIC, ANYWAY, YOUR TIME READING THIS ARTICLE IS NOT WASTED, BECAUSE THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THEY HAVE SURPLUS STOCKS AND BREEDING MATERIAL TO SPARE TO ACTIVE AND SERIOUS BREEDERS, WHO WOULD LIKE TO INCORPORATE THESE DOMINIQUES OR BULIKS. HAVING BEEN BREEDING FOR QUITE SOMETIME, THEY HAVE IN STOCK NICE LOOKING AND WINNING BULIKS, ALVIN'S NUMBER IS 09219662937. PLEASE CALL, AS HE CAN NO LONGER TEXT YOU BACK BECAUSE OF THE SO MANY BREEDERS FROM APARRI TO JOLO WHO WOULD LIKE TO GET A WHIFF OF THIS PHENOMENAL BIRDS!!!

LAST AND THE BEST PERFORMING BREEDERS OF BULIKS IS THE TRIUMVIRATE OF 2 MASBATENOS ENGR RALPH DAIGO AND DOC RONNIE MAGBALON WITH PARTNER AND COMPADRE DIRECTOR GERRY GAROVILAS OF PASIG KAPITOLYO.

BAKBAKAN 2009, ONE ENTRY WON 8 FIGHTS AND DREW 2 TO GET A 9 POINT TOTAL, GOOD FOR RUNNER UP AS ENGR SONNY MAGTIBAY RULED THAT YEAR WITH 9 AND A HALF POINTS. BY THE WAY, ONE BULIK KILLED MY STAG BUT WON'T PECK MY DEAD STAG, MANOK DAW NI PRES JOEY, DI KATALO HE HE HE ! SAYANG!!!
ANOTHER ENTRY OF THEIRS SCORED 9 WINS AND 1 LOSS, FOR ANOTHER 9 POINTS.

BAKBAKAN 2010 SAW THESE THREE SCORE 6 POINTS FOR BOTH GRND RICHELLE 1 AND 2 AT PASAY, DEMOLISHING ADVERSARIES WHO ARE LEGENDS AT THE PIT. THEY PROCEEDED TO WIN 7 STAGS AND DREW ONE AT ARANETA, CAUSING PRESIDENT RICOY TO UTTER, " THIS COULD BE ANOTHER ZAMBOANGA WHITE IN THE MAKING IN THE ANNALS OF STAG FIGHTING HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES.
JUST IMAGINE THE DEGREE OF COMPETITION AT THE BAKBAKAN, WHICH TO SOME- SURPASSED THE EXITEMENT AT INTERNATIONAL DERBIES!!! THAT RENOWN BREEDERS WHO COMPETED AND FIELDED SEVERAL ENTRIES EACH FALLING ONE BY ONE AND NOT EVEN REACHING THE FINALS!! BUT HERE COMES THESE MASBATENOS WHO CONQUERED THE BAKBAKAN 2010 WITH GUSTO! A FORMIDABLE TEAM INDEED!!

SORRY GUYS, YOU HAVE TO FALL IN LINE TO GET STOCKS FROM THESE BREEDERS, AS THEY SUFFERED A HIGH MORTALITY AT THE FARM. ONLY 50 SURVIVED OF THE 300 COCKERELS WE BANDED. BY THE WAY, DIRECOTR ED BULAONG FIGHTS AND BREEDS BULIKS, AS HE IS A VERY CLOSE FRIENS OF THE ARAYATAS!!!

LINE BREEDING

by Dr Charles R H Everett & Craig Russell

My personal research in breeding has led me to begin gathering and collecting articles and books by cockfighters (cockers) of long ago; these men of the past preserved several different breeds of chickens for hundreds possibly even thousands of years. During that time they maintained type and vigor to an unparallel degree. It is my belief that their methods of breeding should be examined in detail to be utilized by the modern preservationist. Let me add, however, that this article is not an endorsement or defense of cockfighting; neither will I belie them in any manner. Instead, it is a heartfelt acknowledgement to men who perfected the art of breeding chickens. Further, I believe the modern preservationist can learn much more from the breeding techniques of cockers than he/she can from textbooks on commercial poultry breeding. (Note* It should go without saying that at all times you must select for vigor and type regardless of the breeding system utilized. Cocker Tan Bark states, “Good breeding is only a matter of intelligent selection of brood fowl…” (Tan Bark, Game Chickens and How to Breed Them, 1964, p. 27). What the ole time cockers strove for was prepotency. They desired to be able to predict with reasonable accuracy the outcome of any particular mating. For this reason, no cocker worth his salt would have consistently used the out-and-out system. Granted, at times they did cross, but very carefully. Their records consistently indicate that when they did cross they did so using the same strain of fowl they were hoping to improve. Of course, they were looking for gameness, but using their methods a breeder can breed for type, fertility, egg production, etc. The first system I would introduce was utilized by William Morgan, of Morgan Whitehackle fame, and some of the English cockers. It is a form of breeding known as “3 times in and once out.” This system was used to produce, in cockers’ terms, a “pure strain.” The following chart will explain how the system works. First Generation Hen Cock ½ hen ½ cock
Second Generation Hen to son Cock to daughter ¾ hen ¾ cock
Third Generation Hen to grandson Cock to granddaughter 7/8 hen 7/8 cock
Fourth Generation Hen to grandson Cock to granddaughter 15/16 hen 15/16 cock
Now in the 5th generation you breed the 15/16 hen to the 15/16 cock. Then, choosing the best hen(s) and cock(s) you begin again (Narragansett, The Gamecock, 1985, pp. 44-45). C. A. Finsterbusch recommends the same breeding strategy in his famous book Cockfighting All Over the Word page 152—153. If they chose to continue line breeding these fowl were what they termed “seed stock.” Seed stock was never pitted. Instead, they were crossed to a different strain to produce their “battle cocks.” Battle cocks were never used in breeding pens if this system were employed. Or, at this point you choose the three to five best hens and begin the clan mating system. Alva Campbell who created the “Campbell Blue Boones” during the early years of the twentieth century line bred his outstanding pullets to one cock, “Daniel Boone,” for eleven straight years (Histories of Game Strains, Grit and Steel, no date given, p.26). D. H. Pierce claimed his “Wisconsin Red Shufflers” were line bred for 35 years with no loss of vigor or gameness. (Histories of Game Strains, Grit and Steel, no date given, p. 20). How did these men accomplish this when so many modern textbooks on poultry genetics maintain this is impossible to do? I have discovered several key answers. First, “an inbreeder must breed only from his most vigorous… specimens” (Tan Bark, Game Chickens, 1964, p. 28). Second, they culled ruthlessly. Third, in any form of line breeding the youthfulness of the stock used cannot be overstated. Fourth, they often carried on the same mating (One cock to one hen) for four or five years. Thus, in twenty years it was possible to have only produced four or five distinct generations. When cockers happened upon a cock and hen that produced winners in the pit, then they mated these two year after year. Fifth, they kept accurate records of every mating and often practiced single matings. Sixth, they only attempted close inbreeding on free range giving the birds every advantage of producing constitutional soundness and vitality (Tan Bark, Game Chickens, 1964, p. 28). These six keys allowed the cockers to be greatly successful at the art of breeding game fowl centuries before the advent of modern genetics. Many cockers practiced variations of the rolling-matings and clan-matings systems. When practicing the rolling-matings they would often include side matings of line breeding. When using the clan system the large breeders often kept five to seven clans. (They called them “yards.”) With the clan matings they most often used the matriarchal system as advocated by Dick Demansky. At times they would create “new” clans or yards of full sisters when a particular hen within the clan produced exceptional sons. Thus, this one hen became prepotent in the new yard through her daughters. Like those of traditional farmers, for whom poultry was an important part of the subsistence, the methods of cockers have often been disparaged by modern experts. But for serious preservationists and small flock owners in general their tried and true methods are among the surest ways to turn simple reproduction into serious breeding and systematic flock improvement. One of the truly wonderful things about raising chickens is that you the breeder can choose your own system of breeding to create your “own strain.” Yes, you can even experiment! Regardless of how you personally feel about the sport of cockfighting, these men of a by gone era have much to teach us. So, why not learn from the original preservationist: cockers?

HANDS-ON Tips

Pagkundisyon

Pakain

Day 21 - Day of fight

SCHEDULE :

6 : 00 a.m. : All fighting stags are on their respective tee-pees. We do the “catch cock” training at the tee-pee by using our self-made catch cock material (you may used asil rooster as alternative catch cock because they can withstand the pain despite repetitive hits.)

7: 00 a.m. : Feed fighting stag using a balance diet of 50% conditioning pellets (Thunderbird Platinum) and 50% grains with some additional vitamins and iron.

10:00 a.m. : Transfer the fighting stags to flying pens. This will help them build strength and power in their wings.

2:00 p.m. : From flying pens, transfer them again to grass pens. We sometimes put pullets along with them inside the grass pens to make them more mature. Grass pen will make them relax.

4:00 p.m. : From grass pens we put them back to tee-pees and resume catch-cock routine.

5:00 p.m. : Feeding time

9:00 p.m. : We bring them one by one to the spar pit (rueda) for light & sound familiarization. By using a teaser rooster, we train them to be alert all the time. After a light workout by walking around the pit, do a “ kahig “ or do a “ salida “ and allow them two buckles while holding on to their tails. After this, wash their feet and faces and place them again at their teepees for them to have enough rest and be ready for the next morning work-out.

Conditioning Guide and Basic Tips During Training by Sonny Lagon (Blue Blade Farm)

Conditioning Guide and Basic Tips During Training
by Sonny Lagon (Blue Blade Farm)

1. Scratching - There are different materials used as scratch for light and heavy work outs. Banana leaves can be used for light scratching and corn husks for heavy scratching. Make sure that your fighting stags are hungry during scratching at the scratch box so you will get better results.

2. Light and Sound (Noise ) - Make the fighting stags familiar with the lights by doing walking routine around the spar pit (rueda) and playing loud sounds on the radio to make them familiar with the noise during fight day or derby day.

3. Tailing ( kahig) and Breaking ( Salida) - Warm up your fighting stags by tailing (kahig) and walking, so that they will develop natural strength and improve their stamina by breaking ( salida). Hold tail of fighting stags and make them fly and hit each other by breaking on the air and down the ground. This helps develop their reflexes and good fighting skills.

4. Sparring (salpok) - Spar the fighting stags to roosters with different fighting styles and different colors like white , grey, black etc. in order for the fighting stag to be familiar with different color of feathers and for them to adopt versatile fighting styles. Sparring will help them learn and develop various fighting techniques and make them clever fighters.

5. Catch Cock - Using our own made catch cock (made with jute sack, foam and used clothes ), we practice the stags to strike on air and on the ground before feeding in the morning and in the afternoon. By doing this, it will help your fighting stags develop endurance and stamina and they will learn to strike with their legs frontally, sideways and back as well as cutting across etc.

6. Rotation (Tee-Pee , Flying Pen and Grass Pen)
